Summer #1-Primary Analysis: Columbus' Journal

Columbus Describes his First Encounters with "Indians"-El Diario of Christopher Columbus' First Voyage to the New World, 1492-1493

Please read passages written by Columbus, himself.  The dates of passages students should read include from October 11-October 22. When students are finished reading, they should answer any or all of the following questions.

Do not hesitate to ask your own questions, or even to question or comment on something one of your classmates may post.  The only things to remember are to avoid text-like phrasing, and to remain polite.

  1. What features of Native Americans did Columbus notice? How did he believe they compared with Europeans? Why did he conclude that "they were a people very poor in everything?"
  2. Why did Columbus think the Indians were friendly? Can you detect hints of what the Indians might have thought about Columbus and his men? How did the two groups communicate with one another?
  3. What did the Native Americans believe, as far as Columbus could tell? Why did he assume that the Native Americans thought he and his men came from heaven?
  4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came aboard Columbus' ship, what might it have said about the Europeans?

1-Colombus noticed that they had features similar to those of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands. He also noticed that they were naked and very strong bodied. He believed that they were strong people, but that they were below europeans and that they could be taken over with ease. He concluded that they were poor because they wore no clothes and that they considered tiny bits of gold to be great amounts.

2-The two groups communicated with eachother by Native Americans that Colombus had on board with him. Colombus thought that the Native Americans were friendly because they worshiped him. Also, he thought that they thought them to be generous. The Native Americans may have thought that Columbus and his men were not smart, as they continued to tell him that there was a kin with much gold, yet he never found one.

3-As far as Colombus could tell, he believed that the native americans thought he and his men were from heaven. They thought he was from heaven because of his skin color and his dress and attitude. He also thought that they would be easy to convert.

4-I believe that the diary would have said the following."At first the europeans were kind to us, presenting us with glass beads and hawk bells. But once they were done on their journey, they did not allow us to leave. They believe us to be below them. They think that they can treat us how they wish and we will do nothing."

1. Columbus described the Native Americans as "a very poor people." This is because he noticed that they were all naked and they had tribal-like paint on their faces and some their whole body (as stated by the Admiral). He believed that these people were strong body-wise, however probably weak when it came to fighting the Europeans. He also compared these people to those of the Canary Islands.

2. I think Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they didn't attack Columbus and his crew, and the Native Americans would trade many rarer items to Columbus for small things in return such as bits of glass. Columbus couldn't really communicate verbally with the Native Americans, so he would give them hand signals on his ship while they were on the canoes rowing toward him. The article states, "I gathered from them by signs that by going southward or steering round the island in that direction..." I think that the Indians thought of Columbus as a miracle at first because of his different skin color and clothing that he had; but later thought of him as a harsh person because in his journal is states that he did take advantage of them just to find gold and he did often fight with the Indians.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, the Native Americans didn't have any set religion. He believed that it would be easy to convince them all to follow Christianity. Though, Columbus does say in his journal that these Native Americans thought that he and his crew came from heaven because of his skin color and rich clothing which was culture shock for the Indians because they didn't even really have clothing.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans that had boarded Columbus' ship I think it would state something like this: "After much time hoping to discover a better and easier way to survive, one day what we thought had been a miracle had arrived on the shore. At first glance, we were sure that these people had came down from the heavens to save us. We greeted them with many of our rarest goods and in return we got hawk bells and bits of glass. However, these people had strange attitudes and gave orders to us which were suspicious. Often times we would fight with each other. Eventually, we found out that they never wanted to make peace with us like we did. All they wanted was to take advantage of us and get rich off of our goods. Soon enough we knew that these people who arrived on our land certainly were not a miracle."

1. The way that Columbus described the people that he saw on the land was that they were poor people because they were not dressed and they were coverd in paint like the people that lived on the Canary Islands. Columbus belived that the people that he had found were people that were fit but could be taken over by the europeans without a problem.

2. Columbus belived that the Natives were friendley people becasue they would treade with the europeans without any problem and they would not attack Columbuses men when they saw them. Another reason that he thought they were friendley because the natives treated his men like gods because of their skin color and the way they were dressed. The two groupes of people had a hard time comuicating with one another but they use diffrent sighns to do trade and get what they wanted. The main reason that the natives treated Columbus the way they did is becasue they had never seen a man of the type of skin color as him and the way that they dressed.

3. Columbus belived that the native americans dident have a set religon and they could be easiley be converted into chrisianity becasue they belived that the europrans were form the heaves and they might worship them and do what they wanted them to do. Columbus writes that the people treated his men like gods.

4. If a journal was kepted by one of the natives that was on one of the ships i belive it would say the following. " A tragity as happened men that we belived were gods from heaven have proven that they are horrible people. They came to our lands to help themselves to what is ours but we can not say no for they have more wepons than us. Me and my men had went on one of the ships that sits out at the sea and we began to trade. The men that we traded with us gave us items to us that we little us to us but we had to give items that were useful to them. They were very demanding and wanted it their way and no other way.

1. Some features that Columbus noticed about the Native Americans were that all the people there were naked and had black paint, some all over there body, or some just on their face. This is why he considered the people to be "a very poor people". Columbus believed that they were a good size, stature, and strong but weak when it came to the Europeans. Columbus also compared these people to the people of the Canary Islands.

2. I think that Columbus thought the Native Americans were friendly because they were trading anything they could find to trade with Columbus, and there was no problem when they were trading with Columbus. Also they were not mean to Columbus and their crew when they arrived on their land. Another reason they thought they were friendly was they treated them very well. The Native Americans would bring them water because they thought they were from the heavens. The two groups communicated with each other by hand signals.

3. In the passage it said that it appeared that the Native Americans did not have any set religion. Columbus also said that it would be easy to make them Christians. The Native Americans thought that Columbus and his men were from heaven because of the color of their skin.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came on board of Columbus' ship, i think that it would have said the following," Us Native Americans thought that we have came across people from the heavens, but we have came to realize that these people are very mean and demanding. We find out that they mostly wanted to see if thy wanted gold from out island. Also we trade with them and we give them very nice goods and they give us glass beads and hawks bells."

1.) The features Columbus described the Native americans as were strong people, with short straight hair. Columbus also stated that the Native Americans were naked wearing no clothing. Columbus believed that the Native Americans compared with europeans because they were a strong people, but due to wooden javalins and unfortafied villages could be taken over with ease and were below them.Over all Columbus concluded that the Native Americans "were a people very poor in everything". He can conclude this because they did not wear clothing. Also he can come to this conclusion due to there lack of iron amoung there javalins. Finally he could conclude that the Native Americans were a poor people becasue they gold rings they worn in there nose, they thought to be a large amount of gold when it was really very little.

2.) Columbus may have thought that the Indians were friendly because when they would come to there lands the natives did not attack them, but they were very generous giving them cotton (although not taken), and trading with Columbus and his men with ease. The Indians might of though of Columbus and his men as gods of some sort, due to his different skin color, and the clothing he wore. You might also think that the Indians thought this of him because they told them where to find large amounts of gold which the Indians valued greatly. The two groups would communicate with each other by hand signals, as they would use when sailing around the island since verbal communication was hard to use between the two groups.

3.) As far as Columbus could tell the Native Americans did not have a religon and would easily be able to be converted to christianity.Columbus assumed that the Native Americans thought he and his men came from heaven because of there skin color and rich like clothing.

4.) If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came aboard Columbus' ship, it might state that they were very kind to them giving them gifts such as glass beads and trading various good. The diary also may state that they came and went as the please, getting water and exploring the land. But toward the end of the diary there could have been parts where they natives talked about not being able to leave because they were held captive, that the Europeans treated them poorly, like they were below them.

1. The features of Native Americans that Columbus noticed, were that they were naked, strong bodied, looked young and had long hair. They also painted themselves with whatever they could find. He believed they compared with Europeans, because they were below them and were able to be taken over with ease. He concluded they were poor, because they had no clothes and felt that receiving gifts such as clothing was like receiving a lot of money.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly, because they were willing to trade with him and his group. The Indians thought that Columbus and his men were rich because of the amounts of clothing and food they had. They also thought that they were friendly because they were also willing to trade and to learn from them, but then thought they were unkind because they took advantage of them. Both groups communicated with each other by talking to the Native Americans he had on board with him.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, the Native Americans believed that he and his men came from heaven because they treated them like they were gods. He assumed this because he heard them say, "Come and see the men who have come from heavens. Bring them victuals and drink."

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans that had boarded Columbus' ship, I think it would have said, "Columbus and his men were very generous to us at first giving us gifts such as glass beads. I do feel though they were greedy because they just came and left unannounced. I was held captive on the ship, not being allowed to leave. They thought that we were below them so they treated us like we were prisoners."

1. Columbus recognized that the Native people were the same skin color and had the same paint techniques as the canaries. he probably conclude  that they were related in a way. He thought the people were poor because of there lack of clothing. The people were strong people but were very vulnerable ;he probably noticed this because they were so quick to barter and except them. Columbus believed that they would be a great lower class to the Europeans ;he believed to weak and rather defenseless compared to how more advanced the Europeans were. He concluded that they were poor in everything because everything they used probably came directly from the nature around them. They weren't that knowledgeable of how to handle advanced weaponry.

2. I believe Columbus thought they were friendly because they were curious about the Columbus and his crew but were kind and humble to them. Columbus considered this friendliness to be an advantage when trying To convert them to Christianity. The native people probably thought that the men wet so different from us ;they were a different skin color and had clothes that were made so different. It would be how us Americans would feel going to china and looking at there different way of life. Columbus communicated with people through sign language like other early Explorers.

3. As far as Columbus could tell the Indians thought he was from a high spiritual value , They believed this because they were made up of higher quality clothing and because of their lighter skin color.

4. If they kept Diaries it would say:

Dear Diary,

I thought these people came from and enlightened place. You deceived us with all of there appearances. What did we do to deserve such derogatory   Treatment? They came here to us, we did nothing but cherish them with all of our highest goods. I feel taken advantage of and overthrown. These people give us loads of Demands and requests. They need to go back to where they came from us and leave us alone

Sincerely, A fellow Native American

1-The main features of the Native Americans that Columbus noticed was that they had short hair that was coarse (like a horse’s tail). He also noticed that it was parted towards the forehead, except there was a portion which they never cut, they suffered to hang down behind. He also noticed they painted themselves. Some, the whole body, colors like black, white, or red, or the eyes or nose were painted. He described them as “strong bodied”, and of much lower class than the Europeans. He also noticed scars and wounds, which he concluded were probably results of violence, when members of other islands invade and most likely tried to make natives their servants. He concluded that the natives were poor because they had no clothing, and no weapons. They didn’t even know what they were. He said “They grasped them through the blades, and cut themselves through ignorance.
2-Columbus found the natives very friendly, because they traded willingly with Columbus and the ship members. They were considered nice at very first according to the Admiral. They would be a lot easier to convert to Catholicism by means of kindness, rather than by force. Natives were much attached when they were given small items of low value. Native Americans were very friendly and willing to make peace with Columbus and his ship members. The Native Americans must have thought that Columbus and his men were friendly and very convenient to have around and to trade with. Columbus had Native Americans on his ship, and communicated using them.
3-As far as Columbus could tell, the natives believed that he and his crew were sent from heaven. He thought this because natives worshiped him and his crew members, bringing them water and victuals. The natives thought that Columbus and his ship members were heavenly because the skin color of the crew was very fair while the Native Americans had dark skin. Also, they thought the he and the crew was from heaven because they came with things for them. They gave Native Americans luxuries, and taught them about weapons and other useful things they did not know about initially.
4-If a Native American were to write a journal about being on a boat with Europeans, I think it would be like this…
On this boat, I am with such divine beings, which must have come from magic vessels. I have never seen a being so bright, and unique. They were very useful at first, and gave us such luxuries that we never had before. We also learned about other useful items in which we can use in everyday life. The people on this ship seem like they are looking for something else though. It is almost like they are trying to find out something about us that is beyond our knowing. They are very sketchy, and throw around orders, in which we don’t feel obligated to complete. I feel as if we are being transformed from friendly traders, to servants.

1. Columbus noticed that the Native Americans were naked and had many colors of paint on their body. He also noticed that they were all able and fit and strong body-wise. He compared the Native Americans to Europeans by calling them strong but said they could be conquered by fifty men. They didn't have any weapons above sticks while Europeans had guns and metal. Columbus called them a very poor people because they thought that small amounts of gold to him was a huge amount to the Natives.

2. Columbus thought the Native Americans were friendly because when they landed they were worshiped as gods and presented willingly with food and water. The Native Americans thought that Columbus and his men were sent from the heavens. They communicated by bringing a few Native Americans on board to talk with him and his crew.

3. The Native Americans thought Columbus and his men were from heaven because of their skin color and clothing. They also didn't have a set religion as far as Columbus could tell, so he thought it would be easy to convert them to Christianity.

4. If a Native American kept a diary of what happened when he came aboard Columbus' ship I think it would be similar to this: "I was excited at the sight of these new people. They had a lot of items I wanted to barter for. They were kind to us at first, but as I stayed on board I started to think they would soon be a threat. They have more advanced weapons than us.

1. Christopher Columbus saw that everyone was naked and seemed to be healthy, strong condition, and beautiful but primitive. Their hair was short , rough like a horse's tail, and he described their hair style as "combed toward the forehead, except a small portion which they suffer to hang down behind, and never cut". Additionally they paint themselves on various parts of the body. Although he never directly states it in my opinion I think Columbus believes the Native Americans to be inferior to himself due to his criticism of technologies only Europe had even feeling bad for them. He says they are a people poor in everything since he is a European who is accustomed to much better life and the Native Americans lacked the things he was accustomed to or familiar. (Weapons, Clothes, Architecture, types of food, and what he thinks is a religion). For example he compared their hair to a horse however horses are not in North America yet.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they were not immediately hostile to their presence in and on their territory. Even being strange and new to them they still welcomed and traded with them. The Native Americans think they must be Gods or powerful beings due to technologies they cannot understand (swords, boats, clothes). Furthermore the Spanish skin color is much darker and different then the Native Americans and their paint might of resembled closely theirs amazing the people. They communicated by the men that they brought on their ship with some sort of sign language or signals.

3. As I previously said Mr. Columbus thought because they did not have the same technologies the Native Americans believed them to be like gods to them (clothes, weapons). Having a different skin color and language might have also convinced them.

4. A native American diary might of said that they were friendly. With their trading, gifts, and advanced technologies they had seemed god-like. Eventually the diary may have included that they were people like them and not gods. They may have noticed the Europeans thought they were better than them which made them feel threatened.

1. Columbus had noticed that the Native Americans were naked, had fine shapes and faces and had short hair. He noticed that these features made them appear similar to those of the Canaries. Columbus compared the Native Americans with the Europeans because they were weak when fighting was involved. Columbus concluded they were poor because they wore no clothes and little amounts of gold was a great fortune for them.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they didn't attack Columbus and they traded anything without problems. I think the Native Americans thought Columbus was a God and a miracle. They have never seen this type of skin color on a man before and the nice clothes Columbus and his men wore. The two groups rarely communicated with one another but when they did they used hand signals.

3. The Native Americans had no specific religion. Columbus believed that it would be easy for them to become Christians. The Native Americans thought Columbus and his crew came from heaven because of the color of their skin and the clothes they wore and they have never seen people like Columbus before.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came aboard Columbus's ship:
Diary: "We thought we met the people from heaven. They were very friendly for letting us aboard their ship but were also very mean. They would trade with us for glass beads and other treasures. When trading they gave us useless items and in return we gave them items that they can use. They were very demanding and had better weapons that might have became a threat. I am very glad that we are off their ship.

1. Columbus noticed that the Native Americans were the color of the inhabitants of the Canaries, had coarse like horse hair and large beautiful eyes. He compared the Native Americans with the Europeans by saying they were strong and could be taken over with ease. Columbus concluded that the Native Americans were "a people very poor in everything" because they had no clothing or weapons.
2. Columbus thought the Idians were friendly because they were kind to Columbus and his shipmates when they landed and made trades with them. The Idians thought that they had come from heavens. The two groups communicated with one another by using hand signals.
3. The Native Americans believed that Columbus and his men were sent from heaven because of their skin color and rich clothing. Columbus assumed this because he heard an old man yell, "Come and see the men who have come from heavens. Bring them victuals and drink." He also believed that they had no religion so they would easily become Christian.
4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans that came aboard Columbus' ship, it might have said something like, "The first time these strange people came to our land we thought they were sent from heaven, bringing us gifts. Soon after they started to get greety. They gave us orders and wouldn't let us leave. I just want to go back home."

1. Features of Native Americans that Columbus noticed included fine shapes and faces, coarse, straight long hair, extremely broad foreheads and heads, and large and beautiful eyes. They were all naked and some painted their faces and bodies with different colored paints. Columbus believed that they compared with Europeans because they were a strong people, but they had weak weapons and defenseless villages so they could be taken over with ease and were below them. Columbus concluded that "they were a people very poor in everything" because he noticed that the people rushed to trade with him and they also wore no clothes and had poorly made weapons. Also, he concluded that they were poor because he thought they considered small amounts of gold to be a large amount.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they would swim to his boat and meet Columbus and his shipmates. They would also offer them many of their items to trade and give them generous gifts, including cotton and water. The Indians did not make an attempt to attack Columbus and his people. Some Indian villages even treated Columbus like a god. They also helped Columbus and his crew by showing them where the clean water was on their land. Hints of what the Indians might of thought about Columbus and their men were that they were from a higher social class and wealthy, or even Godly, seeing as how they had different skin color as the Indians and they were fully clothed. The Indians showed respect to them by giving them gifts. The two groups communicated with one another by using hand signals, for they did not speak the same spoken language.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, the Native Americans had no religion. Columbus believed that they would very readily become Christians, because they have a good understanding. Also, Columbus assumed that the Native Americans thought he and his men came from heaven because when they discovered a few villages, the people all came down to the shore, calling out to them and gave thanks to God. They gave Columbus and his men water and other foods. As they swam to their boats, the men made an inference that the Indians thought they had come from heaven. As some came on board, men and women would scream -"Come and see the men who have come from heavens. Bring them victuals and drink." Many of the people also lifted their hands up to heaven and called for Columbus and his men to come to the land.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came aboard Columbus' ship, it might have said something like this:
"When I first saw the ship come in from the distant waters, I was shocked at the size and detail of them. Whoever was on the ships were definitely wealthy people. When I first saw the pale-faced people, they were fully clothed and we thought they would bring no harm. We brought them water and cotton and swam to their ship. They did not speak the same language as us, so we communicated through hand signals. I thought they were nice and kind people, until I wanted to leave. The people did not let me leave and held me hostage. I didn't know what they wanted from me. They kept asking me questions and I answered them as well as I could, hoping they would not hurt me. How can they treat me and the rest of my people like this? The next chance I get I'll make an attempt to escape off this boat."

1. The features that stood out to Columbus were nudity, skin color, paint on them, and that they were primarily younger. He could tell that they had no knowledge of weapons and that they seemed to have no religion. Columbus thought that the Indians were much less civilized than Europeans, he intended on making them servants by teaching them his language and religion. He concluded that they were poor because their land was supposedly rich in gold but they lived in such poor manners that Columbus automatically assumed they were poor.

2. Columbus thought that the Indians were friendly because they would come swimming up to the boats attempting to trade with Columbus' crew. The Indians most of thought that Columbus and his crew were gods or kings because of the fact that they were all clothed and came by sea on a boat. Also Columbus had given them beads which they wore around their necks, they seemed like high people to the Indians. They could hardly communicate but they did so with signs.

3. Columbus thought that the Indians thought that they had came from heaven. The Indians brought them food and water, and continued to praise god. The Indians must have assumed that since they were white, clothed, and came from the sea that they were from heaven.

4. I think that the diary would have been much like Columbus' diary about the Indians. It would have probably expressed how Columbus came on a boat and how they had cloths on. They probably would have written about the gifts that they received from Columbus but also why Columbus had showed up on their coasts and to their villages. It would have been almost exactly the same but from the Indian's view.

1) Features that stood out to Columbus the most were how the native americans were nude, how some of them had paint on their bodies and he also described them as "strong bodied" but how they lived in a much lower class than other Europeans he has seen, they seemed to be much more poor. He thought that they were poor since they seemed to not have clothes and did not have weapons. He also realized that they had no knowledge of what weapons even were and no religion that they followed. He concluded that they had nothing so he took them in, in a way and taught them his language and religion.

2) Colombus thought the Indians were friendly because they kept coming up to his boat and meet their ship mates and when they did they were very friendly and attempted to trade some of their goods with them. Hints of what the indians thought of colombus were the Indians treated Columbus as a god and treated him very well because they saw that he was clothed and that they came on sea on a boat and they appreciated that. The Indians, Columbus and his shipmates communicated by using hand signals.

3) As far as Columbus could tell the indians believed that colombia and his shipmates were from heaven because of their appearance and how they had gotten their by boat in sea. Colombia assumed that the Indians thought this about himself because they would bring them clean water and they treated them very nicely.

4) The diary might have said something along the lines of, when I first saw the giant boat I was very surprised and anxious to see the wealthy people that are in it. They were fully clothed and they showed me what weapons are and they gave me some of their own. They traded with us some of their own objects. We treated them very well because they showed us so many new things.

2.Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they didn't attack Columbus and his crew, and Columbus and the Indians would trade items with eachother.I think the Indians liked Columbus and his men at first because the Indians swam up to their boat and brought them parrots, balls of cotton thread, javelins, and other items to trade. But later on the Indians didn't like Columbus because he used them for their gold and took advantage of them. The two groups communicated with eachother by using hand signals since using verbal communication was difficult.

1. Some of the features that Columbus noticed when he first saw the Native Americans is that they were naked and that some of them had painted themselves black like the Canaries and other had painted themselves other various colors like white and red. They also did not necessarily paint themselves the same way either… Some painted the whole body, some just the face, and some just their nose. Columbus believed that the Native Americans compared to the Europeans through the aspects of warfare. He thought this since they both did not have very many weapons and they also were easy to take down and he stated that they could be taken over with ease. He also concluded that they are very poor people since when they found a little bit of gold they would think it’s a fortune and they were also willing to trade for anything Columbus offered them and were very eager to trade with him.

2. He thought that the Indians were friendly because they were willing to trade their much higher value items for his lower valued items like glass beads and he also thought that they were friendly because they did not attack him when he came to where they were living. I believe what the Native Americans thought of Columbus is that he was a nice person to have around and he was someone that was easy and willing to trade with. They also thought that he was a miracle because of his different skin color that they had never seen before and he actually had clothing. The 2 groups did have a hard time communicating but they used various hand signals when they did need to communicate.

3. As far as Columbus could tell he thought that the Native Americans thought of him as someone that came from heaven. They thought this because his men had different skin colors that the Americans had never saw before. They also thought this since they came with items that they were willing to trade and they provided the Native Americans with very valuable information like how to make and use weapons.

4. If a diary was kept then it would have described how when the Native Americans first saw Columbus they thought that he was someone that was sent from heaven and they loved him. They also would have said how he was willing to trade with them and also how he gave them very good information on how to live and make weapons.

Columbus concluded that “they were a people very poor in everything” because the Native Americans were completely naked and didn’t own weapons.

2) Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they were willing to trade for whatever items Columbus would give him. Also, the Indians would not attack Columbus and his men. The Indians believed that Columbus and the men came from the heavens. People from villages brought them water and other victuals. The two groups communicated with one another by using hand signals.

3) As far as Columbus could tell, the Indians believed that him and his men came from the heavens. He assumed this because both men and women cried with loud voices, "Come and see the men who have come from heavens. Bring them victuals and drink." Also, people from the villages listed up their hands and called Columbus and his men to come to the land. Although the Native Americans appeared to have no religion, Columbus believed they would readily become Christians.

4) If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who come aboard Columbus’ ship, it would have said that the Europeans first seemed friendly and god-like. The diary would also include that as they got to know the Europeans better they realized they were just regular people like them, except they were richer and owned more stuff such as weapons and clothing.

1. Columbus noticed various features of the Native Americans. This included their appearance ("their hair...short and coarse..") the face paint they wore (Red,white or black)and also the fact that many of them bore scars although they really had no kind of weaponry compared to the Europeans. Meaning that, they lacked rifles and swords among other things. This compared to the Europeans with the fact that the Europeans had large amounts of gold, wore clothes, and had advanced weaponry. Therefore, all of these attributes obviously would lead him to conclude that they were a "poor people" because they had never seen swords, or large amounts of gold and were "naked."

2. Columbus thought the Native Americans were friendly because he basically got away with ripping them off in trades. He states "they wanted to possess anything they saw with us." This included miniscule material such as pieces of glass and broken platters. I think these can be used as some hints that the Native Americans basically thought he was a god because they wanted anything he owned and would give so much in return for so little and also the fact that they interrogated him "as if he came from heaven." They managed to communicate with one another by use of hand signals and trading.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, they believed he and his men were "from the heavens." He assumed this because Columbus and his men were unlike anything the Native Americans had ever seen. They dressed differently, had a different color skin, and came from a foreign place.

4. I believe that if a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came on board Columbus' ship, it would have been filled with awe-inspired wording because they would have felt that they were on the ship of a god. I think the journal would've described the Europeans as extremely wealthy people who had riches such as gold and advanced weapons that a Native American onboard never saw before. However, I think the journal would take a turn for the worse as they began to realize they were going to be used as servants rather than a more friendly relationship.

1. Christopher Columbus noticed many things about the Native Americans. He noticed that they were friendly. They noticed this because the Natives brought offerings to the explorers. He also noticed that they were very poor. He also noticed that the Natives could easily be converted to Christianity. He noticed their short coarse hair. He came to the conclusion that they were poor because they wore no clothing.

2.Columbus thought that the Native Americans were friendly because they provided offerings and did not attack when the explorers arrived. The Native Americans thought that Columbus was a god. The Europeans and the Native Americans communicated by using symbols and by teaching a few Natives simple words.

3. As far as Columbus was concerned, the Native Americans believed that him and his crew heavenly. He assumed this because they gave gifts and were not violent towards the explorers even though he could tell by their scars that they often had wars.

4. If a diary was kept about the experience of the Native Americans, it would probably include something about the glass beads that the explorers gave them. They might also write about how they learned English words in order to communicate with the other Natives.

1. Features that Columbus had noticed of the Native Americans were that they were naked and compared them to the people from the Canaries for having fine faces painted with different colors. Some even had more than just their face painted such as their whole body. Columbus also noticed the Native Americans hair to be short and coarse combed towards the forehead. Compared to the Europeans Columbus saw the Europeans to be somewhat smart but also weak and at a lower class then they were because he believed that they could be easily converted to the Christian faith since they had no religion yet and that they would also make good servants to them. He basically concluded them to be poor people because they had no clothes on their bodies and on OCT 19 Columbus stated how to them a large amount of gold is a actually a small amount of gold, this shows how Columbus thought of them to be overall poor people.
2. Columbus thought the Native Americans were friendly because of how willing the Native Americans were to trade with the Europeans and also because the Native Americans didn't attack when his ships arrived to their island. The Indians may have thought of Columbus and his men to be people of worship because of the type of clothing they were wearing and because of the things they possessed such as their weapons. In order to communicate the two groups used hand signals and had Native Americans aboard their ships.
3. As far as Columbus could tell the Native Americans did not have an specific or set religion which is why he assumed it would be easy to convert them to their religion. He also assumed they thought he came from the heavens and this is mostly because of the fact that they have not seen people like Columbus and his crew yet with such skin color and such nice clothes, to the Native Americans this was all new and impressive.
4. If a diary was kept by one of the Native Americans on board of the ship it may have mentioned the Europeans in a way such as this, "As these ships first came upon our shore we thought we had encountered some miracle. The people on these ships were like people we haven't seen before so we offered so much to them to trade. However, as it turns out these people we thought to be from the heavens are far from what we expected. They have taken advantage of us and held us on their ships to get to the gold for their own benefit and we do not appreciate what they have done here."

1. Columbus described the Native Americans as "poor". He had took note the they were naked and had tribal-paints all over their faces and bodies. He thought that they would be weak if fighting with Europeans, so they could be taken over easily, however they had a strong build to them. Columbus compared them similar to the people of the Canary Islands.

2. I believe Columbus thought that the Native Americas were friendly, mostly because they had "worshiped him" and brought no harm to their crew. Because of the clothing they wore and the weapons they had, Native Americans thought them as godly and worshiped them. Also the Native Americans traded rare foods and items for cheep things that the Europeans didn't really find that important. They both communicated through hand signals while the Columbus and his crew brought them on the boat.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, Native Americans didn't have a religion. It would be easy to convert them into Christianity, mostly because the Native Americans had already thought that Columbus and his crew were from heaven. They thought Columbus came from heave due to their skin color and rich clothing, Indians really didn't have much clothing at all.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans, it would be like "We thought we had been blessed by God to have someone else share our land and trade off goods with each other. They had brought many things we did not know of, and we had brought them our corns and foods and rare items. After the shortest amount of time, things had become strange, we were now being treated like this wasn't our land anymore. What were we to say and stick up for, we did not fight, and they forced us with weapons. We had found that they didn't want the peace with our land or to share, they wanted it to themselves. We are soon to find that Columbus and his crew are certainly not what we had worshiped..."

1. Columbus noticed that the Native Americans were always nude and appeared to be very strong bodied. He compared their features to those of the Carny Islands.Although he thought they were strong, he thought that they were no match for the Europeans, and against them they might appear to be weak. He referred to them as poor because they wore no clothes. As well as, the fact that a trifling amount of gold appears to be a great amount to them.

2. I think that Columbus thought of the Indians were friendly because they traded with him without question, and when Columbus had come on to their land they did not think to attack. The Native Americans looked upon Columbus as a miracle, because the his skin color and how nicely he was dressed. The article states, "They came many of both sexes, everyone bringing something, giving thanks to god... and lifting up their hands to heaven." Therefore showing that they thought of Columbus and their crew as a God given miracle. These two groups communicated with each other through hand signals since they could not communicate verbally with one another.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, he believed that the Native Americans did not have a set religion. He believed that the Natives had thought he and his crew had been sent from the heavens with the way they thanked god when they had arrived, as well as their skin color and clothing.

4. I think that the diary would have mentioned how in the beginning the Europeans appeared to be very welcoming in the way that they offered gifts such as glass beads and hawk bells. But as time went on they began to give them orders and that first impression of them being a miracle sent from god was soon erased by people that began to take advantage of them. That their view on the Europeans was no longer a miracle, but a disaster. They were kept hostage, and were not able to leave. It would mention that who they believed to be sent from heaven, were now taking advantage of them and there was nothing they could do about it.

1)Columbus noticed the native Americans were strongly built people but also very poor. he believed they were poor due to the fact they had little to no cloths and wore tribal painting. Columbus compared these people to those of the canary islanders. he also believed that besides there strong form, they were weaker than European forces(due to weaker equipment and villages) and would be able to be taken over.

2) Columbus most likely believed the Indians were friendly due to the fact they did not ambush him. also the Indians would proceed with unequal trades on the advantage to Columbus. the Indians most likely did not like Columbus because he took advantage of him, spread deadly diseases to them, and massacred many. communication between them mostly existed through hand signals because there was no verbal communication.

3) Columbus could tell the indians had no set religious beliefs. this would make them an easy target to make them believers of Christianity. the native Americans most likely believed that Columbus was from heaven or a god because of his different skin color and clothing.

4) A diary layout from a native American would have most likely stated:" today a strange man appeared at our village. we noticed a large ship pull up and we were unsure how to handle it. the man spoke words noon could understand, but we communicated through hand signals. he must have been sent from the gods, or so we thought. he looked different than us by the color of his skin and the silk and fabrics he wore. we later came to discover he was a cruel man who just wanted us for money. also his voyage from where ever he came from left us with many illnesses we cannot treat."

Some of the Native Americans had even covered their faces and bodies in paint of different colors which Columbus had compared to the people of the Canaries. He had also compared them with Europeans stating that they were weak and could easily be taken over since they did not have any forms of weapons. Whereas the Europeans had advanced weapons and skills. Columbus had planned to take advantage of their weakness by turning them into Christians and bringing some back as servants. He had concluded that they were a people very poor in everything because they had no clothes or weapons and they had found what was actually a small amount of gold rather large.

2. The Indians had been found friendly to Columbus because they hadn’t attacked Columbus or his ships when they had arrived and they had been open to trade with him. The Native Americans had thought of Columbus and his men as gods and a type of miracle. They had been amazed of the type of clothing, weapons and trade Columbus and his men had. They had found Columbus generous because he would give them glass beads and other items that they would find valuable. These two groups had communicated with each other through hand signals and by some Native Americans coming abroad their ships.

3. As far as Columbus could tell he had believed that the Native Americans did not have a set religion and it would be easy to convert them to Christianity. He had also believed that the Indians thought that he and his men came from heaven. This is because they were a different race, had dressed differently, and came from a new place. The Indians had praised the “gods” by continuing their trade and offering them food and water.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came abroad Columbus’ ship it would have stated how generous Columbus and his people had been. They would have felt as though they were having an encounter with a god who was giving them food and offering items to trade. They were being presented with new things that they never could have imagined before. But some would have stated that they realized they were being taken advantage of. The only reason they had brought the Native American onto the ship would be for their own benefit of finding the gold quicker. Some would even have shared how they felt they were being treated poorly and being held hostage. They would explain their confusion because they thought these people were sent from heaven but were not actually acting like it.

1. Christopher Columbus noticed a number of things about the Native Americans. For example, he noticed that they had parrots, balls of cotton, javelins, glass beads, and hawk bells. He also noticed that everyone was naked even the women. In addition, he noticed they had short hair with a horse tail like long piece of hair. Also, he noticed some painted their bodies. Columbus believed that the Native Americans would make good slaves, and he thought he help six of them learn the English language. He concludes they are poor because they were naked and had paint on them, and he concludes that they were poor because off the items the Native Americans used to trade.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they did not attack him or the crew and they also traded with him no problem. The Indians thought of Columbus as a great leader and worshipped him. They all had a tough time communicating with eachother because the Indians didn't speak English and they communicated with hand signals.

3. Columbus wrote in his journal that as far as he could tell the Indians had no religion. Columbus thought that the Indians thought that Columbus came from Heaven because of the men's skin color, clothing, and they hailed from a different place.

4. If a diary was kept by one of the Native Americans it might have said...
I was working on making my arrows today when all of a sudden a man, which I believe is from Heaven, appeared with his crew on our land. We traded items with him and he showed us a sword that I accidentally cut myself on. We then, carried on but he started ordering us with weopens, and made us board his ship and we sailed away from our friends, family, and everyday life.

1) The features of the Native Americans that Columbus noticed were that they were the color of the inhabitants of the Canaries. Also, Columbus described the Native Americans as people with short, striaght, coarse hair who painted their bodies with black, white, or colored paint possibly to make themselves look like the people of the Canary Islands. He observed that they were naked and had strong bodies with many scars and wounds. Columbus also noticed that the Native Americans had large beautiful eyes and were very poor people. Columbus believed that the Native Americans compared with the Europeans because they were both strong people but the Native Americans had weapons that were weaker or less developed then the Europeans which made the Europeans the better fighters. The Native Americans had weapons such as sticks and javelins. However, the Europeans better weapons such as swords and better skills which made Native Americans weaker then the Europeans. Columbus concluded that "they were poor in everything" because they wore no clothing, considered small amounts of gold to be alot, and did not have advances in weapons like iron in their javelins.

2) Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they approached Columbus and his men. Also, they were willing to trade and help Columbus and his men. The Indians didn't try to attack Columbus's ships and weren't violent towards them which showed that they liked Columbus and were friendly toward him. The hints I detected about what the Indians thought about Columbus and his men were that they were from heaven and that they worshipped them. I think this because the Indians swam out to see Columbus and his men and they thanked God for their gift of these people while offering them gifts. The two groups communicated wtih eachother by signals, trade, and examples like when Columbus showed them what his sword was. Also, they are planning on communicating by taking Natives back on the ships with them to teach them their language and eventually bringing them back to their land to teach the others.

3) As far as Columbus could tell, the Native Americans believed that Columbus and his men were sent from heaven. From this knowledge, Columbus could tell they did not have an official realigion and would be easily converted to Christianity. Columbus assumed that the Native Americans thought he was from heaven because they looked different, he was willing to help them, and the Native Americans were thanking God for blessing them when Columbus and his men showed up.

4) If a diary was kept by one of the Native Americans brought aboard Columbus's ship, the writing about the Europeans might hve said "The Europeans presented us with gifts nicer then we have usually. They gave us materials like glass beads which were new to us. They took me on their boat and treated me well at first. I was here to learn more about them to teach everyone when I go back to our land. The Europeans are not always pleasant like when they demand and give out orders. However, their knowledge and advancements in weapons will be useful and much needed. Therefore, I stay with them until they return me to my own land."

1.Columbus noticed that the Indians were not wearing any clothing however possessed strong bodies. These people resembled those of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands due to the color of the skin as well as the paint. Columbus concluded that they were very poor in everything because they were not wearing any clothes and had no possession of any iron as they saw with they're weapons. Also he had noticed the delight on the Indian’s faces when they were presented with very cheap items such as the glass beads and glass beads and hawk's bells. He compared that the Indians were very unintelligent compared to European because they were uncivilized as well as not technologically advanced however they were strong bodied much like the lower class of Europeans
2.Columbus had thought that the Indians were very friendly because of the willingness and enthusiasms to trade with them. Also the Indians had not shown territorial aggressiveness towards Columbus and his men. The Indians might have thought that Columbus and his men were from the heavens due to the fact that he and his shipmates possessed foreign items as well as foreign clothes. The two groups had communicated through hand motions and signals.
3.Columbus inferred that the Native Americans would be easy to convert due to the fact that he hadn’t noticed they noticed any one set religion. Also instead of force he concluded that through kindness and the impressiveness of their arrival many would willingly convert.
4.If the Indians had kept a diary it would go like this……
When these foreigners arrived many of us believed it was a miracle, a gift from the heavens. We had never seen anyone wear clothing like these and possessed unique gifts. We had eagerly traded and shown them kindness, however as time went by these nice attitude towards us had changed. Before we realized these “gifts from heaven” were not actually blessings but a plague. They quickly taken hostages used us to find gold and any items of actual value. Many times argued with us and we had found that our initial assessment of these people were deathly wrong.

1) Colombus described the Native Americans as naked, but very strong, and wore paint on their bodies, similar to those who inhabited the Canary Islands. Colombus also said they were a "very poor people" because they had no clothing, and gold was highly valued. Although the Native Americans were strong, they would be easily defeated by the Europeans.

2) Colombus thought that the Indians were friendly because they were more than willing to trade with him. They believed Colombus and his crew were some sort of miracle because they came to the land with nice clothing and by boat. Although there was little communication between the two groups, when there was, they would use hand signals.

3) Colombus believed that the Native Americans didn't follow any specific religion, and believed that it would be easy to convince them to follow Christianity. The Natives believed that Colombus and his crew were from heaved because of the color of their skin, and their clothing. Which was much different that the Indians were used to, because they had no clothing.

4)If a diary were kept from one of the Indians on the boat i believe it would sound something like this..."These men, who dressed so nice, and who we thought came from the heavens, who traded with us, and gave us glass, have now taken advantage of us, and never wanted to make peace with us. We realized these men were not here to help us, and were not good in any way."

He also noticed that they had had painted themselves with various colors; some more than others. They were all very friendly to them and got attached when they gave the Native Americans beads and other things of small value. Columbus believed they compared to Europeans because they were very strong built and were able to defend themselves from other people attacking them. He also believed that they would be easy to take over because they didn't have the materials for good weapons and didn't know how to use them. Columbus concluded that they were poor in everything because they didn't wear any clothes and also because they considered beads and other goods of small value to be very valuable.
2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they did't try to attack them or threaten them. They gathered around because they were curious. They might have thought that Columbus and his men were from heaven. They tried communicating through signs the best they could. Some of the Native Americans were able to learn some of the words spoken to them also.
3. As far as Columbus could tell, the Indians didn't have a religion in which they believed in. He thought that they would be easy to convert to Christianity. They thought that Columbus and his men were from heaven because of their skin color and fancy clothing.
4. I believe that the diary would have said something like, "These people came to our island and were very nice to us. They gave us all kinds of things that we have never seen before. The Indians seem to admire and worship the Europeans and were delighted to be on their ships.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they would bring him water and trade rare items with him. Some people were saying he was sent from the heavens. 2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they listened to him and gave him things he wanted. Thoughts that the Indians might have had about

1. Among the features that Columbus noticed of the Native Americans were no clothing on neither men or women, they were all young and below 30 years old, face and body paint, however they were "of good size and stature, and handsomely formed". He soon realized that the Europeans were highly superior over the Native Americans. In the text he stated that he can conquer them with only 50 of his men. He also noticed that their skin color was that of the inhabitants of the Canaries. Columbus was led on to believe that they were a poor people by lack of clothing, and inexperience with weapons. They had no weapons, and were never acquainted with them either, Columbus noted.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly from the beginning, as they never attacked the Europeans, but rather wanted to trade with them. The Indians traded with good will, and were able to exchange many goods with Columbus and his men. The Indians thought of the Europeans as godly figures, due to their different skin, better technology, and clothing that the natives lacked. They communicated by using hand signals, but also hoped to teach them the Spanish language as well. Columbus wanted to send six Indians to Spain to learn the language, and teach it to the fellow natives when they returned.

3.As faras Columbus could tell, they Natives had no religion. This made him desire to convert them to Christians. He stated in his journal,"They have no religion, and I believe that they would very readily become Christians, as they have a good understanding." The Native Americans praised them with food and water. The white skin color, clothes, and goods that the Europeans had were foreign to the Native Americans, which I think is the reason why they believed Columbus and his men came from heaven.

4.If a diary was kept by a Native American aboard the ship, I believe it would say: "When these men came to our land, we respected them, and what they brought to us. Many of their goods are new to us, as they have weapons, clothes, and food. We traded with them, and thought nothing of it. However, they would eventally turn on us, taking villagers hostage,as we can do nothing about it. Many of us are now held captive by the Europeans, treated like servants. We are helpless, and it does not seem like that will change.

1. Columbus noticed that the Natives were naked, very strong, young, had straight coarse-like hair, and painted their skin with different colors. To him, the Natives were very similar to the people of the Canary Islands because they looked alike and had the same skin color. Columbus thought that they were strong, but when it fighting they were weak compared to the Europeans because they started trade quickly and they had no iron, they only had sticks. Therefore, the Natives could be taken over easily. He concluded that the people were poor because they had no clothes, no weapons, and they didn't have iron, instead their javelins were made of sticks and fish bones.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because he assumed that they thought he and his men came from heaven. He also thought they were friendly because they were eager to trade with him, once he gave them red caps, strings of beads, and other small items and they didn't attack his ships when he arrived. Indians thought that Columbus was a person to worship because he owned clothes and he had a different skin color. The Indians also thought that he was important because they kept telling him where the gold was, and that is something that you don't tell every person. Columbus wasn't able to talk to the Indians because they didn't have a common language. The article states that the two groups communicated by hand signals, and he took some Indians on his ships to learn his language.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, the Indians didn't have a religion. This made Columbus think it would be easy to convert them into Christians. Columbus assumed that the Natives thought that he and his men came from heaven because he owned clothes and people went down to the shore, to call them, and give thanks to God. They also brought him water and other supplies. Columbus also assumed that the Native Americans believed that he came from heaven because they tried to guide him to the king and the gold.

4. If a diary was kept by one of the Native Americans that was on Columbus' ship it might of said:
"Well, when we first met the Europeans, they were very friendly and it was like they were sent from heaven. They gave us a few items and they had nice clothes. Then, we started trading with them and it got worse. We traded them supplies they needed, like food and water, and they gave us useless items, like bits of glass and beads. Once I boarded his ship, him and his men became very demanding. They were treating us like servants, and wouldn't allow us to leave. I really wish I didn't get involved with Columbus and didn't board his ship."

1. Some features of the Native Americans that Columbus noticed that they all go completely naked, they are all very young and probably not any older than the age of 30. They had fine shapes and face, their hair corse and mostly short, and also some had wounds and small cuts on their bodies from defending themselves from outsiders. He concluded that they were people very poor in everything because they were completely naked they had no weapons and no iron, only javelins which were made of sticks and fish bones.Columbus thought the Natives were very similar to the people of the Canary Islands because they looked similar, had the same skin color, and they were strong, but when it came to fighting they were weak compared to the Europeans because they had no iron, they only had sticks.

2.Columbus thought the indians were friendly because when he first arrived it got onto their land they didnt come and attack his ship they just gathered. Also when Columbus game them red caps and strings of beads to wear upon their necks they were happy and more than happy to trade with Columbus and his crew. The Indians looked up to Columbus and his crews as people to be honored and worshipped and thought of them as godly people which they knew were wealthy because of the clothing and the different skin tone. The Indians and Columbus and his crew communicated by hand signals because the idians had there own native language, but Columbus took some on his shi[ to quickly learn his language.

3.The first thing Columbus said about them was "As I saw that they were very friendly to us, and perceived that they could be much more easily converted to our holy faith by gentle means than by force...". So Columbus is obviously saying that the indians have no set religion which means he doesnt have to force them into converting into christianity they will do it willingly in his eyes.Columbus assumed that the Indians thought him and his crew came from heaven because they were easily trading with them and listening to them and basically trating them as if they were gods.

4.If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans who came aboard Columbus' ship it might have said:
"Dear Diary,
I have been brought onto this ship and seen how the European live and how they are completely different by how they were clothes and how they have a different skin color than us. When we first met them I as much as many others looked at them in such a respectful way because in my eyes they were as holy as one of their gods that they believe in. These Euorpeans came and gave us things like caps and beads just for knowing us nothing else and in return we traded stuff with them naturally. These Europeans care about us enough to teach us their own language! Then as we started trading with them and getting closer it started to get bad they gave us stuff we wouldnt need and that was useless for us like beads and peaces of glass. His crew were very agressive and treating us like we were there servants by telling us what to do. After a while they wouldn't even let us leave. Columbus and his crew turned out to be horrible people!"

1) Columbus noticed features such as them being naked, young, and different colored skin like in the Canary Islands. He noticed they were strong bodied but still easy to conquer since they had weak weapons and villages. He concluded that they were very poor in everything because small amounts of gold seemed large to them, they had weak weapons, they had no clothes, and they hurried to trade with him.

2)Columbus thought the indians were friendly because they treated him and his crew like gods. The indians seemed to think that they were sent from the heavens. Also the Indians traded with him very easily and willingly. There was no common language between the groups. The two groups communicated by hand signals. Columbus also took Indians on his ship to learn English.

3)As far as Columbus could tell, the Native Americans had no set religion. He assumed the Native Americans thought he came from heaven because of the clothes he wore, the color of his skin, and the way acted. The Indians have never seen anyone like it before. Columbus thought it would be pretty easy to spread Christianity there.

4)The diary would most likely have said good and bad things about the Europeans. It would include how they thought these people were gods and traded valuable items to them. But as the days went on it would have said bad things about the Europeans about how they weren't being treated right and the Europeans think they could do what they want. The Indians felt threatened by them.

1. Columbus thought that the Native Americans were poor because they did not wear much clothing. Also they thought a small amount of gold is a lot. He compared them to the canaries because they had similar body paintings. He also noticed that they were strong people.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they worshiped them. Also the Indians were very easy to trade to. The 2 groups used hand signals to communicate

3. The Indians believed that they were from heaven because of there clothing and skin color. Columbus thought that he could easily spread religion because the Native Americans did not have a religion.

4. It probably would say how the European men very like gods and that we traded valuable things but it also might have said how they were threatening.

1. Columbus's first impression of the native people was that they were all very young, handsome, and in great shape. He also said that their foreheads where much broader than anyone he has ever seen and that there skin color resembled that of the aboriginal people of the Canary Islands. He believed that they could have been easily taken over by even just a small force of Europeans, which he states in his journal "I could conquer the whole of them with fifty men and govern them as i pleased." Columbus stated that "they were a people very poor in everything." He thought this because they appeared to be less civilized by not wearing clothes and that they considered small amounts of gold as great treasures.

2. Columbus must have thought the natives were friendly because they didn't attack him and his crew when they came to there land. The natives treated the Europeans as gods based off of the way they dressed and there skin color. Also the natives would trade what the Europeans considered rare items for little pieces of different materials. Although the the two groups couldn't speak to each other they still managed to communicate through hand signals.

3. Columbus believed that the natives thought he and his crew were from heaven. This is due to the fact that the explorers were of a different skin color and dressed themselves in clothes. Also Columbus couldn't conclude that the natives had any form of a religion in there culture.

4. If a native on one of Columbus's ships kept a diary then the diary would most likely tell about how the god-like Europeans came and treated the natives fairly, traded with them, and were overall good. Then over time they became hostile and started to enslave them and treat them poorly like they were a lesser peoples compared to them.

1. Columbus noticed that the Native Americans were quite friendly and could be converted to Christianity. He saw that some painted themselves with black which made them look like the Canaries. Columbus believed that they were poor because they all go naked, they have no weapons, and no iron.

2. Columbus believed the Indians were friendly because as soon as his ship arrived the Indians were already coming with "gifts" to the ships. I think the Indians found Columbus and his men to be godly as they gave up items of more value for glass beads. They communicated through bartering and they learned words that were spoken to them.

3. It appeared that the Indians did not have a religion. Columbus assumed that the Native Americans thought he and his men came from heaven because they kept bringing Columbus and his crew anything they could find on the island.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans is might have said that the Europeans are very wealthy and possess items that have never been seen before. They are in search of new lands. They speak a different language and they are very cooperative. They are not hear to fight with us as they wish to become close with us.

1. The feature of Native Americans that stood out to Columbus the most was their appearance. He talks about “their hair [being] short and coarse,” the face paint they were wearing that was red, white, or black, and the fact that most of them were nude. Columbus also considered them to be in a lower social class than any other of the Europeans that he has seen. The Native Americans were thought to be poor and Columbus thought that they were poor because they seemed to not have clothes and did not own any weapons. He saw that they had no knowledge of weaponry or religion making them “people very poor in everything.” Therefore after observing these features; Columbus shared with them his language and his own religion.

2. Columbus thought that the Indians were friendly because they approached his boat and ship mates with friendliness and willingness to trade for whatever items Columbus would give them. The Indians also did not pose any threats to Columbus and his crew making them seem friendly to Columbus. The biggest hint that shows us what the Indians might have thought about Columbus and his mean may have been how they treated Columbus as a god. They believed that Columbus and his men came from the heavens. The two groups of people communicated with each other by using hand signals.

3. As far as Columbus could tell, the Native Americans believed that he and his men were gods who were “from the heavens.” Columbus assumed that the Native Americans thought he and his men came from heaven because in their eyes, Columbus and his men were unlike anything that they had ever seen before. They had immense differences: skin color, their origin, and the way that they dressed.

4. If a diary was kept by one of the Native Americans who came aboard Columbus’ ship, it might have mentioned how from the start the Europeans seemed to be very welcoming in the way that they offered gifts (ex: glass beads and hawk bells). The diary would then continue to go on to talk about how time passed, they began to become controlling and give them orders. The diary would most likely discuss how their first impression of Columbus and his men being people sent from god was quickly changed to people who were taking advantage of them. The Native Americans were held hostage and were not able to leave. The diary would have the main purpose of how the unfortunate change of personality of Columbus and his men disrupted the Native Americans’ peace and stability throughout their homeland.

1. Some of the things Columbus noticed were that the Native Americans didn't wear clothes, but they paintes their bodies. Also, he saw that mostly, they were physically fit people. However, while Europeans had guns, Native Americans had a lack of weapons.

2. Columbus thought that since the Native Americans didn't attack him, they were nice. Columbus had to use hand signals because he couldn't talk to the Indians. In the beginning, the Indians probably thought very highly of Columbus, but when he started to take advantage of them they probably began to dislike him when they realized it.

3. Columbus thought that it could be easy to convert Indians. It seemed to him that the Indians believed he and his men were from heaven, due to his different skin and his clothing.

4. I think if there was a diary it would say something about how at first, the Europeans were very kind people, and that they gave the Indians hawk bells and glass beads. However, after a while they realized that the Europeans thought that the Indians were below them and they treated them very poorly.

They communicated with hand signals and by bringing select Native Americans aboard his ship.

1. The features of the Native Americans that Columbus noticed were that they were covered in paint and had little to no clothes on. He also noticed that they were very poor because of their lack of clothes. Columbus felt that they were beneath him because of their poverty and lack of defenses and technology. He concluded that they were very poor and even said, “They were people very poor in everything “. Also Columbus compared them to the inhabitants of the Canary Islands.

2. Columbus thought they Native Americans were friendly for many reasons. One being that the Native Americans did not attack them. Also they traded high value items for much lower value items. The Native Americans probably thought of Columbus as a god because they treated him very well and almost like a god because he traveled by seas and had many items they had never seen. To communicate they used hand signals because they did not know each other’s languages.

3. Columbus thought the Native Americans believed he was a god or from heaven, He thought this because they treated him like a god and were amazed by the things he had. Also they gave him food, water, and gifts. He also thought they had no religion and could get them to convert to Christianity.

4. I think that the Diary would be something along the lines of, “I woke up the other day and there were strange men with strange things that allowed them to travel across the sea. They were very nice and trade us amazing things that I have never seen before. But now they are very hostile and think they can just stomp all over us.

#1 – Columbus noticed that the Native Americans were usually nude; he was surprised to find that even the women were always naked. He noticed that the people had fine shapes and strong, well shaped faces, that they had short hair which was “coarse like that of a horse’s tail” and they combed it toward their forehead. Columbus also noticed that some of the Native Americans even painted themselves with black, which makes them appear like Canaries. Columbus compared the Indians to Europeans by deciding that they were slightly intelligent but concluded that they were weaker and poorer than Europeans. Columbus thought that they would make good servants to the Europeans and thought about bringing back six of the Indians to present to the Europeans He also thought that the Native Americans could be easily converted into Christianity since they appeared to have no religion. Columbus concluded that the Native Americans were overall poor people basically off of what their reign showed him. They wore no clothes; they acted strange, wore paint on their bodies and came off as excellent servants.

#2 – Columbus thought that the Native Americans were friendly because when Columbus’s ships landed the Native Americans had not ambushed him or think to attack him but instead tried to approach Columbus and his men. Columbus also thought the Indians were friendly because of how generous and willing they were to trade with the Europeans. The Indians probably thought very highly of Columbus and his men. From the color of his skin to his clothes and everything about him, Columbus and his men were a completely new kind of person to the Native Americans, so they basically looked up to them and in a way worshiped them. The two groups communicated with each other by signals and trade.

#3 – As far as Columbus could tell the Native Americans did not have a specific set religion. This is what made Columbus think that it would be easy to turn the Native Americans into Christian. It also made Columbus think that they would not need to use force to get the Indians into Christianity because they seemed willing. Columbus assumed that the Indians thought he and his men came from heaven because they dressed differently, looked differently and came from a different place. Since everything about Columbus and his men was new to the Indians they were surely surprised and pleasantly impressed.

Answer #4 –
Dear Diary,
Who are all of these people that I see standing before me? Unfamiliar faces, unfamiliar smells, unfamiliar feelings. I look at them as if they were heaven sent. The way they dress makes them seem as though only god himself could have dressed them with his bare hands. They seem so surprised by our culture. Our everyday way of living, our satisfying routine, is so strange and so unknown to them. They offer stunning gifts that they call glass beads and hawk bells. And our people as well have offered many gifts in return. We all praise these new people, embracing what only god could have sent. But, slowly I am realizing something before the others. I see what these people are trying to do. I see the way they look at us as if we are lower, as if we are not good enough. I know soon they will show their true colors, their real behavior and we will all be surely unpleased and surprised.

1. Columbus noticed that the Native Americans were very poor people because that don't have what the Europeans and himself had. Also Columbus noticed that the men that came ashore were young and of fine shapes, very handsome, and they had straight horse-like hair. They also had heads broader than any person he had ever seen, they had eyes were large and very beautiful and not black like he thought they would have. Columbus concluded that " they were a people every poor in everything" because they didn't have what the Europeans have; they didn't have clothes, weapons, or ships.

2. Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they would bring everything thing they had to Columbus and his crew. Columbus thought that the Indians were worshiping him. When Columbus landed on an island he discovered the people yelled out, " Come ans see the men who have come from the heavens. Bring them victuals and drink." I think this told Columbus that the Native Americans were friendly. When Columbus went from island to island he would take people from the islands so that they can communicate with the other islanders.

3. The Native Americans believed that Columbus and his crew were sent from the heavens, as far as Columbus could tell. He assumed that because they would bring him water, spices, and gold.

4. If a diary had been kept by one of the Native Americans, it would say, " When the Europeans came to our land, we thought that they were sent from the heavens and bought the what we needed. They gave us glass beads, hawk bells, and leather and then told us that we had to go on the vessels. They use us to communicate with the people of the other islands, also to tell them were the other islands are."

1:Columbus stated that the Native Americans ,"seemed as a whole a poor people." This is due to one, they were naked and covered in paint which they could assume they couldn't afford clothing. Also, when they swam out to trade they had small, some what trinkets, such as; cotton thread, wooden javelins, and parrots. And finally, they didn't have iron to make weapons and that small amounts of gold was like a small fortune to them. When Columbus compared them to the Europeans, he said they were strong physically but weak when it came to fighting the Europeans.

2:Columbus thought the Indians were friendly because they openly traded with each other. Also, they didn't attack Columbus and his crew upon their arrival. And finally, they communicated through signals using their ships as it states in the article,"I gathered from them by signs that by going southward..."

3: Since it seamed the Native Americans didn't have a religion, Columbus assumed it would be fairly easy to convert them to be Christian. Although, the Natives thought that they came from heaven because they were all covered in clothes and his different skin color.

4: If a diary was kept I believe it would have said this. "one day a miracle was blessed upon us when, what seemed as gods, arrived on our shores. They bore fancy cloth they wore on their bodies and skin was lighter. We gladly traded with these mysterious people; wooden javelins, cotton thread, and parrots."

1.Coulombs when reached near the coast of new found land. he first encountered Indians and said that They were naked and strong bodied. He noticed that these people resembled with those of canary is land.He thought them to be poor as they were not only technologically much behind then Europeans as well as financially. they were not at all financially astute as they traded things like hawk bell to be of a great value. So,it was obvious for anyone to think they can be easily took over.
2.Indians at first, were really kind and generous to Europeans even though coulombs was an alien for them . they treated him as god provided him and his men food and shelter for many days they don't attacked the Europeans as they get off the board but rather welcomed them they use to interact through sign language and told him the way where he can find more gold. Columbus rewarded them with there this generosity buy exploiting them to the maximum extent he can and as a result Indian found coulombs to be harsh.
3.Columbus though that these Indians were really easy to convert Christianity as they have no set religion and as they saw them coming from galleon and watching his men, arms and clothing
they thought he was a celestial creature
4.I think that a dairy would describe advent of coulombs as highly enthusiastic as they thought he was god but later on it would describe it as a wrath because the atrocities they commit on them
