Civil Rights Assignment - Musical Analysis

After spending class discussing the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s, it is time to look at its cultural impact.  Bob Dylan is "...an American musician, singer, songwriter, music producer, artist, and writer. He has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when he was an informal chronicler and a seemingly reluctant figurehead of social unrest."

Students will listen to two songs by Bob Dylan.  The first is mandatory for all students.  The second is a choice.  Afterwards, they will research the events described in the song, and analyze the lyrics.  Looking at the historical account and the artistic account, students must analyze and evaluate the song.  Caution, may contain explicit lyrics.

Mandatory Song
Blowin' in the Wind

Now, choose one of the following songs, research the events/individuals involved, and answer the questions on the form (linked below).

  1. The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll
  2. Only a Pawn in the Game (About Medgar Evers)
  3. Oxford Town (About James Meredith)
  4. Hurricane (About Rubin Carter)
Complete the form when done researching and listening.  This is what your grade will be based upon.
