Summer #3-Primary Analysis: Edward Waterhouse

Opechancanough’s 1622 Uprising in Virginia-Edward Waterhouse, Declaration, 1622

Fifteen years after settling Jamestown, the Powhatan completed a surprise raid on the colonists.  Edward Waterhouse's Declaration explains to investors of the London Virginia Company exactly what took place, the losses, and the effects of the raid.  Until this time, the Colonists felt relations had been friendly (even if they would kidnap Powhatan leaders whenever they ran out of food, clean water, or other necessities, in order to force their neighbors to help).
To decipher 17th century words that may be spelled differently, try pronouncing them aloud.

Background information on the raid is available from the Encyclopedia Virginia.

When students are finished reading, they should answer any or all of the following questions.

Do not hesitate to ask your own questions, or even to question or comment on something one of your classmates may post.  The only things to remember are to avoid text-like phrasing, and to remain polite.

  1. What is the colonial reaction to the attack? Provide support.
  2. How was the attack prepared? How did the colonists survive?
  3. Why did Waterhouse suggest conquest was preferable to civility? Provide support.
  4. How might this Declaration have read, had Opechancanough written it? What evidence from The American Pageant supports this?

1-The colonial reaction is to wait for the natives to continue their attack. This reaction caused major food shortages, as the natives did not continue their attack for another six months. They also believe that by attacking the settlers, the natives have given up any right for "gods mercy and grace". They then attacked the natives villages, starved them, stole or broke their hunting and fishing gear, and enslaved them.

2-The colonists survived because they raided the natives, and they grew Tobacco, which allowed them to be more self sufficient. The attack by the natives was wells thought out. It preyed on the colonists lack of defense and care. The natives went to their houses in small bands, carrying no weapons and wares. The natives then took advantage of the colonists relaxed attitudes and used their own tools to slay them. Because of the way he plantations we're layed out, they were not easily defendable.

3-Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility for many reasons. He thought that the natives were rude, naked brutes. Also, he thought that the attack was the natives way of rejecting the Christian God. By that logic, the natives had given up all rights for mercy. He thought that any one who was a pagan was incapable of civilized behavior. Also, he said that the animal population would rise without the Natives hunting year round.

4-This is how I believe the Declaration would have been written had Opechancanough written it. "this attack is a warning. Do not continue to try and change our ways any longer. We have accepted your ways, yet you continue to try and change ours. It would be in your livelihoods best interest if you were to leave Virginia at once. We do not wish to cause a war, we just wish for you to stop meddling in our affairs and our religion.

1. the reaction was to wait and see if the native americans would continue there attack, however they didnt and the colonists sufferd a severe food shortage that winter (1622-1623). also by attacking the settlers the native americans lost the colonists trust and led to the secong aglo-powhatan war.

2. The Colonists survived because theye didnt need to rely on the native americans any more. the colonists started to grow and cultivate tobacco making there economy less dependable on the Native Americans. The attack was played out because the colonist thaught of the Native Americans as friendly people and often invited them into there homes wich the Native Americans took advantage of and on the day of the attack they woundered into the colonists houses and slaughtered them using the colonists own tools and weapons.

3. Waterhouse believed that conquest was better than to change the Native Americans beliefes and way of life because it would be easier to just kill them all and take there land and food. also by killing the native americans this would lead too more deer and other huntable animals for the colonists to sieze. waterhouse also believed that they were "rude" and a "Naked" type of people who rejected christianity.

4.if Opechancanough had writen the declaration then it might state why they attacked the colonists. the American Pagent states that the Indians attacked the Jamestown Settlement because The Indians Were "pressed by the land-hungry whites and ravaged by European Disease.

1. The colonial reaction to the attack, was that they waited for the enemy to continue their attack first, but ended up in starvation in the winter of 1622-1623. Also, by attacking the settlers, the Native Americans were considered untrustworthy and led to the second Aglo-Powhatan War.

2. The attack was prepared by the natives preying on the colonists trust so they could pursue an "inside attack". The colonists survived, by raiding the natives and growing Tobacco.

3. Waterhouse suggested conquest was preferable to civility, because he thought the natives were insulting and rejecting Christianity. Also, he thought that by killing the natives, the animal population would increase.

4. If Opechancanough had written the Declaration, he would have included why the natives attacked us and why the colonists let their guard down for the natives.

1. The colonial reaction was to wait to see if the Native Americans would continue their attack but it ended up causing the Colonists to starve during the winter of 1622-1623 because they didn't attack. It caused the Colonists to not trust the Native Americans anymore which led to the Colonists attacking the Native Americans which caused the second Aglo-Powhatan War.

2. Opechancanough planned for war and part of his plan was for the Colonists to settle in a place that wasn't easily defendable. The Native Americans "preyed on the Colonists' trust". They would go into the Colonists' houses unarmed and with goods to trade with. The colonists survived by attacking the Native Americans villages. They thought "conquering them is much more easy than civilizing them". By conquering them, it left more food for the Colonists'.

3. Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility because he considered the Native Americans rube, barbarous, and naked people. He also thought that "the violence might have been caused by their rejection of the English God". Waterhouse thought that anyone who was a Pagan must be conquered and controlled.

4. I think that if Opechancanough wrote the Decloration it would have gone something like this: "This attack on your people is a warning. A warning that you should leave our land. You came onto our land and thought you could change our lifestyle but we don't want that. You should leave Virginia now unless you want to start a war. We will not hesistate to attack your people if you don't leave within a reasonable amount of time."

1. The colonial reaction to the attack is to wait for the Natives to carry on their attack. This reaction produced food shortages as the Natives haven't attacked for six months. By attacking the colonists, the Natives had left their rights for God. The colonists then attacked the Native's communities, famished them, took and ruined their gear and imprisoned them.

2. The attack was prepared because the colonists lived on since they invaded the Native's communities. The colonists developed tobacco which made them more independent because of the revenue from the exports. The attack planned by the Natives was organized very well. The attack was preyed because the colonists required defense and care which they needed in order to attack the Natives. When the Natives departed to their villages they carried no weapons along with them. When the Natives took advantage of the colonists calm attitude at the right time, they used their own weapons to kill the colonists. The plantations were in the way of the attack, so the colonists weren't strong and couldn't defend themselves very good.

3. Waterhouse suggested conquest was preferable to civility because he believed that the Natives were impolite, naked creatures. Waterhouse also believed that the Native's attack was their own way of refusing God. That judgement made the Natives give up all privileges of mercy. Waterhouse assumed that anyone who was a pagan was unable of educated behavior. Waterhouse said the animal population would increase because the Natives wont be hunting year around anymore.

4. If Opechancanough had written the Declaration it would have been very different. It would have said: "Take caution for this serious attack. Stop changing our lives now and live your own. You came onto our land and are trying to change us. We have listened and agreed to you and you still try to change us. It would be the best for everyone if you left Virginia this minute. We want you to stop interfering with our business, politics and faith".

3. Waterhouse suggested the conquest was preferable to the civility because he thought the native Americans were rude, naked people. He also thought they were wrong for rejecting Christianity. He thought if the natives would kill then the native popultion would increase. Also he thought anybody that was pagan needed to be controlled.

4. If opechancanough had writte this declaration it might have sounded like "be aware of what is going on around you. You should live your own life instead of adjusting to other people" and it may state why the colonists were attacked.

1) The colonial reaction of the attack on Friday, March 22 was to wait for the natives to continue their attack. However, they didn't attack for another 6 months, which caused major starvation in the winter of 1622-1623. The colonists then attacked the natives which lead to the second Algo-Powhatan War.

2) The attack by the natives was very well planned. It "preyed on the Colonists' trust." The Colonists at the time were very relaxed and not ready for attack. The natives took advantage of their relaxed attitudes and killed many of the colonists with their own weapons. The colonists survived because they grew tobacco, making their economy less reliable on the natives and more sufficient.

3) Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility because he thought that the attacks were the natives' way of rejecting Christianity. He also believed the natives were rude and that there would be more animals to hunt without the natives hunting them year round.

4) If Opechancanough had written the Declaration it may state something like this: "Leave Virginia and start a settlement elsewhere. We don't want you coming to our land and forcing us into your ways of life. Consider this attack a warning."

1. The Colonist were caught off guard and in shock because they have had no problems with the native Americans earlier, even after trading with them and enjoying peace with each other (Although colonist kidnapped some of Native American leaders to force them to help) . Additionally colonist for the most part ventured out unarmed and lived in less defended towns which Opechancanough used to his advantage.

2. The attacked was prepared in that the Indians knew the colonist every routine and that the colonist trusted them. Welcoming them into their homes and using information they learned about them they killed 347 colonist off guard. The colonist who were terrorized survived barely waiting for Opechancanough to continue attacking in which they suffered major food shortages during the winter.

3. Waterhouse justified conquest rather than civility because of the damages done to them. They killed innocent people and thought the Indians were savages who deserved to be punished. They can keep the resources they were trading to the Indians to themselves. Conquering the Indians the animal population will increase tenfold and they will have their territory to expand to. Additionally because he thought they were savage and rude people that being civil would take too long of a time and too many resources because the Indians were spread out far. He also wanted the Indians to replace the man they killed as laborer and teach them a lesson for deceit.

4. If Opechancanough had written the Declaration it would have explained that the attack was just a warning and a little payback for them kidnapping their people and hurting them earlier. That he didn't want them to expand any farther into lands that they had lived on for years and they didn't need to be absorbed by the British and believe in their religion. Our book the American Pageant supports this from pages 29-32 talking about the tense relations the two parties had and what colonist did to them from raiding villages to burning crops which led the Indians to want to have this perpetual war to get rid of the settlers.

1. The reaction that the colinist had to the attack was to waint for the native americans to attack again but this did not happen for many months. As winter came around many colinist endured a difficlute winter filled with starvation and death. By attacking the colinist any trust that was held between the natives and the colinist was broken and ended up hurting both sides.
2. The attack planned by the natives was a very cunning trick. The natives new that the colinist trusted the natives and would let them into the houses and the natives used that to suprise the colinst and kill them with their own wepons. The reason that the colinist survived because they became more self sufficent and dident relie on the natives as much as they once did. The colinist were able to grow crops and get a working ecomeny.
3. Waterhouse suggestet that counquest was preferble to chility because he considerd the natives lower than the colinist and that they were dirty and uneducated people that could on be delt with by forse. Waterhouse also belived by killing off the natives this would lead to more reasources to the colinist.
4. If the Declaration was written by Opechancanough it would of stated the reasons why the natives attacked such as kidnapping natives stealing land and reasources.

1.) The colonial reaction to the attack was to wait for further attacks by the Native Americans. Those attacks didnt occur for another six months though, which in turn caused the colonists into a major starvation during the winter of 1622-1623. Since the Native Americans attacked the conlonists all trust between the two groups was broken.

2.) The attack on the colonists was prepared by first the Native Americans having the colonists trust. Once there trust was gained the colonists would lay down there tools/weapons when with the Natives. The Natives would travel in small groups without weapons. The Native Americans ended up taking advanatage of the colonists trust and used the colonists own tools to kill them. The colonists survived because they learned to become self-sufficient, and not be totally dependable on the Native Americans. As an example they began to grow tobacco.

3.) Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility for a few reasons. One reason was that he thought they were rude, and "naked" people.Another huge factor Waterhouse suggested that was because he believed that the Native Americans attacks were there way of refusing God.

4.) If Opechancanough had written this " Declaration" some of the things that may have been written down could have been why they attacked. Such as the colonists had kidnapped natives before. Another thing that could have been written was that they attacked because they did not want to be forced into the colonists ways, and they wanted to be respected as one of there own. The evidence from the American Pagent that supports this is on pages 29 through 32. They state that things were tense due to earlier encounters between the Native Americans and colonists.

1. The colonial reaction to the attack was initially shock. The English people at the time thought that their relations were in good standing with the Indians which is ironic because at the time the settlers treated the Indians like recourses to be used rather than actual human beings, like English people took hostages for food and water. Also, now that the Indians are conquering the English, they had given up any right to be converted to Christianity.

2. The attack was prepared by the Indians ahead of time. The plan was thought out. The colonists survived because they immediately fled to their fort. They were initially dying from disease rather than the attack, because in their fortification, sanitation was an issue, which created disease. They were trapped with nowhere to dispose of garbage or wastes. They were also forced to trade things like corn with the Indians during the winter.

3. Waterhouse preferred conquest over civility because in attacking the English, as far as Waterhouse was concerned, the Indians had proven that they were nothing more than animal savages, who didn’t deserve conversion to Christianity, and since they weren’t worth saving in the view of Waterhouse, they were nothing more than competitors for limited resources.

4. The Indian would’ve said…
You people come here to out country and expect us to give up our ways? The Earth doesn’t belong to you. You cannot take away what is not yours.

1. The colonial reaction to the attack was that they were put into surprise that the Native Americans had attacked because there seemed to be no disputes between the groups before. The colonists then decided it would be best to just wait for the Natives to possibly continue on with their attack. However, this attack wasn't continued for another six months which ended up causing large food shortages in the winter of 1622 to 1623. In the end this led to the second Algo-Powhatan War.
2. The attack was well prepared by Opechancanough, it consisted of basically taking advantage of the colonist's trust with them. They went in small groups to the Colonist's homes unarmed with no weapons on them. The Natives even came with things to trade and the colonists had calm attitudes and felt at ease which allowed the Native Americans to take adavantage of their calmness and attack with the colonist's own weapons. The colonists survived by learning how to be independent and not to rely on the Native Americans so much. They learned to grow tobacco and have much more revenue which meant a good working economy.
3. Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility because he believed that the attacks the Native Americans had done was a sign and their way of showing their rejection towards God and towards Christianity. Waterhouse also believed that the Natives were rude, uneducated people at a much lower social status then they were at and deserve to to be penalized, the Pagan should first be conquered and then controlled according to Waterhouse as well.
4. If Opechancanough had written this declaration it may have read something along the lines of this, "The attacks we carried out against you should be taken as warning signs for you to leave Virginia and begin your settlement elsewhere. Instead of messing with our religion, our faith, our politics, and our lifestyle you just worry about your own. Please stop trying to make your own adjustments to our way of life and the best thing you and your people could do is to just leave our settlements and stop bothering us."

1.The colonial reaction to the attack by the indians was that they were frightend. They decided though, to wait for the next attack. However, that attack didn't happen for six months. Within those six months the colonialist started to starve from lack of food in the cold winter. So the indians seized the moment and attacked.

2.The Indians prepared the attack very mythotically because they knew over time the colonialist would trust them around thier weopens. One way that ensured this attack was full proof was that the Indians didn't carry weopens. However, this wasn't fullproof because the colonialist didn't go down without a fight and survived. They survived because they learned how to live on their own without the Indians.

3.Waterhouse suggested that the conquest was preferable to civility. This is because he thought the Indians were dirty people and he sees them as savages as it says in the article.

4.If Openchancanough wrote the declaration it might have said...
"Leave at once you must, these attacks will start becoming more serious if you do not. You cannot take the land and dispose of it, to us it's sacred and we will kill you if try anything again... Trust is the mother of Deceipt."

1- The Colonial reaction to the attack was a fearful one, however they felt the need to fight back now that the settlement no longer needing Indian support. Most importantly, the Colonists were panicked by the manner of the initial attack, and rather than going out and fighting, they waited for another attack, while facing severe food shortages.

2- The Native attack was a clever one that used the element of surprise. They showed up with no weapons whatsoever, and basically lured the colonials into a situation where they had no reason to fear for their safety. Once the time was right they siezed weapons/tools from the colonists own houses and slaughtered everybody including children. Luckily, for the colonists they were at a point in the settlement where they no longer needed the Natives completely and with tobacco were able to actually have a sustainable economy.

3- Waterhouse suggested that conquest was a better option than civility mainlt because he saw the Natives as a nuisance by this time. The settlment was no longer in need of aid from the Natives and without them Waterhouse could see the settlement flourishing. This is because without the Natives, the settlement would no longer have to compete for land, food, and there would be no other significant threats to the colony with the Natives enslaved or killed.

4- If The Declaration was written by Opechancanough, I believe it would have went along the lines of describing all the disadvantages the Settlers provided the Natives and the justification for the attack. The Pageant supports this by stating how disease was basically destroying the Natives due to their lack of immunity to it and how the settlement was consuming Native land.

1. The colonists reaction to the attack was to wait for the natives to then attack again. They wanted to do this so they would be prepared this time and not would not lose. This in turn though cased them food shortages so they attacked the natives instead of waiting and they took all the natives food and ruined all their gear.

2. The attacked was prepared by the natives first getting the colonists to trust them. Once the colonists had trusted the natives then the natives just simply went to the front doors of the colonists and attacked them. They took advantage of the colonists very relaxed attitude. The colonists were able to survive though because they grew their own tobacco which taught them how to depend on each other instead of having to depend on the natives for everything. That eventually helped them and made them colonize better.

3. Waterhouse thought that conquest was preferable to civility because he considered the natives to be uneducated, rude, naked people. He thought that they were of lower power to him and wanted them to be treated like it. He also thought that by killing the Natives then that would lead to more resources in order for the colonists to survive instead of having to share them all with the natives.

4. If Openchancanough had written this Declaration then it would have been very different. It would have stated about how the Natives had attacked and also about how they did not want to be changed any longer and wanted to be themselves. You can see all this information supported in our text book, "The American Pageant", from pages 30-31. In those pages that describes what went on as of conflicts between the natives and colonists.

He had felt that the attack that the Natives had preformed was their way of going against and rejecting God and Christianity. He believed that the Natives deserved to be punished for what they had done.

4. This declaration most likely we would have read "Beware of what is about to come upon you. This is a warning for our attack. You have attempted to change our ways and it is not happening. Stop trying to get us to live your way and keep to yourselves. We have accepted your ways, now accept ours. I strongly suggest you move out of Virginia so we don't have to create war. We have had enough of you interfering with our way of life and religion." The evidence that supports this is how it states that the Native were pressed to attack by to land-hungry whites.

1. The colonists were surprised by the attack because it happened in a time of peace. The Native Americans used this however as an advantage and found it easier to attack because the colonists were trusting them and even inviting them into their homes. Edward Waterhouse also refers to the attacks as a "barbarous massacre in the time of peace".

2.The Native Americans founnd it easy to plan the attack because they gained the colonists trust by showing them game, fish, birds to hunt and showing them the grounds. In turn the Colonists would invite them into their homes many times. Also, the English didn't settle in easily defended towns which fell into the Native American's strategy. The colonists survived because they realized they didn't need to depend on the Native Americans because they knew farming techniques and hunting and they also decided to expand their territory.

3.He mainly believed this because he believed that the Native Americans would not accept Christianity as their main religion. So, in his mind, the best thing to do was to expannd their territory through conquest and forcibly converet the Native Americans into Christians.

4. If Opechancanough had written the declaration it would probably have read as a warning that if the colonists continued to interfere in their affairs they will attack again and most likely plummet into a state of war. He would most likely want to not be prosecuted because of his religion and he would also ask fir the colonists to stop hunting and fishing on their grounds and if not they will attack again and with more brutality. That's how it would have been in my opinion.

1. The Colonial Reaction to the attack was a surprise that Native Americana’s did approach to the attack. The Colonists thought then that it would be best to wait on the next attack, but this wasn’t the best idea. While they were waiting for the Native Americans approach they didn’t realize that they would attack after six months. After waiting for so long the colonists were at a food shortage in the winters of the 1622 to 1623. The final result of this ended up to be the second Algo-Powhatan War.

2. The attack by the Opechancanough, was very well prepared and they approached them because they knew the colonists every move and the colonist trusted them, which was an advantage for the Native Americans. The colonists survived this attack by trying to do the basic agriculture needs and not depend on the Native Americans so much.

3. Waterhouse suggested conquest was preferably to civility because; he believed that the Native Americans were rejecting the belief of God and Christianity. He believed that the Native Americans were no longer good people, uneducated and deserved to be punished because of their actions. He thought the Native people would kill and which would increase their population. He also felt that anyone who was Pagan should also need to be controlled.

4. If Opechancanough wrote this declaration it may had been something like this, “The attacks that we did was because it is a sign for you to leave Virgina and live somewhere else. We feel that you are messing with our religion and ways of life. We no longer want your people to change our lives and adapt with you.”

1. The colonial's reaction to the attack was that the natives gave up any rights to be able to convert to Christianity and have god's mercy and grace. They sabotaged the natives by cutting off any means of them getting food.

2. The natives' attack took advantage of the colonists' trust by being friendly to the colonists so they felt that they didn't have to fear attacks from the natives. A converted native helped warn the colonists of another attack and then they started to fight back to survive.

3. Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility because it would be a lot easier to do. He said the natives were rude and barbaric. Also the natives' attack implied that they gave up the rights to join the colonists.

4. If the Declaration was written by Opechancanough I think it would say why the natives attack the colonists. I think it would say how they wish that the colonists stop trying to change the natives' way of life and religion and to stop stealing their land.

1. The colonial reaction to the attack to the attack was to wait for the Native Americans to continue their attacks. Since the Native Americans did not attack for another six months, there was a serious food shortage in the winter of 1622-1623. Because the Native Americans attacked the settlers, all trust was lost and it led to a second Aglo-Powhatan War.

2. The attack was prepared by the Native Americans knowing the colonist’s daily routines. Also, the colonists trusted the Native Americans, so they did not see the attack coming. The Native Americans were able to just walk into the colonists’ homes and attack them when they least expected it and even used the colonists’ own tools to kill them. The colonists survived by learning how to be self-sufficient and not have to depend on the Native Americans for help.

3. Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility because of what has happened to them. The Native Americans caused so much damage and caused so much pain to the colonists. They thought the Native Americans needed to be punished for the things they have done. They stopped trading their resources with the Native Americans. If they clear the Native American population, there would be more land for more animals and the colonists would be able to expand. They can no longer trust the Native Americans and they believed that they should be punished for their actions.

4. If Opechancanough had written this Declaration, it might have included the fact that they were just warning the colonists to stop trying to change them and let them be. He would also explain how he didn’t want a war, but he had to do something to make the colonists stop. Evidence from The American Pageant that supports this is that the colonists were always trying to force Christianity upon the Native Americans.

1.The attacks from the native Pawhatan's put the colonists into a state of panic. The massacre left the colonists on edge, leaving anticipation of continued assaults. This created a food shortage lasting from the winter of 1622-1623. However, the colonists would not allow this act to go unpunished. In Edward Waterhouse's "Declaration", that due to the betrayal of their trust, the English would now pursue to conquer the natives, and take their land.

2. As described in Waterhouse's "Declaration", the natives came to the colonies unarmed, as one would expect. Somecame to pursue trade, while others would sit down to eat with the at-ease colonists. However,on that day, the natives attacked the English with their own weapons, located in the houses. They wiped out a quarter of the colony's population. This was a well-planned assault, because the English had nothing to be cautious of. As far as they saw, the Indians took them in as one of their own. However, the natives turned on them, that very day.

3. Waterhouse had multiple reasons that suggested conquest would be preferable to civility. The first, was the it wouldn't be physically dificult to conquer them. He suggested possibilities of removing them by force or surprise, burning their corn to cause famine, burning down their houses, boats and canoes, or chasing them out with horses and bloodhounds. All of these methods were possible to the English who were by far more advanced than the Natives. You could also infer that civility would be difficult due to religious dispute. Waterhouse refers to their god as a devil in "Declaration".

4. Had Openchancanough written the declaration, it would say, "While our attack to your settlement may have seemed unprovoked, I can assure you that it wasn't. Ever since you have entered Virginia, your people have treated it like your own, while that is not the truth. If you cannot accept our culture, than we ask you to leave this land immediately. We are not opposed to your beliefs, as you shouldn't be to us. Consider this attack a warning, to either change your ways, or leave Virginia." The American Pageant supports this because it states that when the English settled in Virginia, they often pressed the Indians for land, and also gave them disease. The English wanted to overpower the Indians, and the Virginia Company issued for orders calling for a perpetual war with no peaceor truce, The American Pageant states.

1. The attack caused the Colonist to become less independent on the Natives. They even planned on destroying the Native Americans altogether. The colonist figured that with the Native Americans gone, they would have more land, more animals for food.

2.The attack was prepared by deceiving the colonist that they were peaceful people. The Native Americans were trusted by the colonist so much that they were able to get into the colonists' houses. The colonist were able to survive because Chauco and other Virginia Native Americans warned of the attack

3. Waterhouse thought that conquest was favorable to civility. This was because it would be easier to take them over than to be civil. It would be very difficult to be peaceful with such barbaric people. Eliminating the Native Americans would also have many other benefits. With them gone, the colonists would have more land, livestock, and food.

4. If Opechancanough had written the Declaration, it would have explained the attack.

This reaction wasn't very good because it caused food shortages and the natives didn't continue their attack for another six months. The Native Americans attacked the settlers, starved them, and enslaved them, which led to the second Aglo-Powhatan war.

2. The native americans knew everything the colonists did during the day. They gained the colonists trust to prepare for the attack. Since the colonists trusted the Native Americans, the colonists didn't see the attack coming. The Native Americans attacked when the colonists were least expecting it.They just broke into their homes and attacked them with their own tools. The colonists survived because they became self-sufficient, they grew tobacco, which meant that they didn't have to depend on the Native Americans.

3. Waterhouse suggested that the conquest was preferable to civility because he thought the natives were rude, naked people. He thought that by them attacking they were rejecting Christianity. He believed that they needed to be punished for everything they had done.

4. If Opechancanough wrote the declaration I believe that he would have written that the attack was a warning and the colonists needed to back off from the natives customs. They need to stop trying to change the customs and they might as well leave now because the natives were getting angry and they were probably going to attack again because they were getting tired of the colonists butting into their ways.

#1 The colonial reaction to the attack was surprise since the Native Americans they thought there were not disputes or arguments between the two different people and they seemed to enjoy one another’s help in trading and other things. The colonists decided to wait and see if the Indians would go through with their initial attack. The attack did not continue for six months and caused food shortages. Eventually it led to the second Algo-Powhatan War.
#2 Opechancanough prepared the well thought out attack on the colonists. They took the colonists trust and turned it into their best weapon. The natives were welcomed into the colonist’s homes and never brought in weapons, only carrying things to trade. The colonists were calm and trusted the Native Americans which gave the Indians the upper hand and eventually led the colonists to their own death. The Native Americans even killed the colonists with their own weapons. The colonists survived by learning that they could obviously no longer depend on the Native Americans so they learned to be more independent and grow tobacco.

#3 Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civility for a couple of reasons. One being the fact that he thought the Indians were rude and savages who were in a much lower class. He also believed that the Native Americans attacking the colonists were a way of showing that they rejected the Christian religion and god. Another reason for Waterhouse suggesting conquest over civility was because they can have more resources to themselves that were used by the Native Americans such as hunting the animals.
#4 Had Opechancanough written this Declaration it would have read “The attacks that occurred to your people were just warnings to you for kidnapping, using, and hurting our people earlier. You have tried to change the way my people and I live and we will stand for it no longer. We have our own culture and beliefs so let us be and leave us alone. We don’t want you expanding any further into lands we’ve called our home for years. Leave our home and stop creating issues and bothering my people and I.”

1) The colonial reaction to the attack was to wait for the Natives to continue their attack. However, the Indians did not attack again for months. This caused food shortages for the colonists in the winter on 1622-1623. However the colonists began to attack the Indians and began the Second Anglo-Powhatan War. The colonists attacked the Indian villages, stole food, and enslaved them. By the winter of 1623-1624, the English saw the Indians starving rather then themselves.

2) The attack was prepared easily because the Indians had the trust of the English. The Indians knew they colonists daily routines and often shared meals, stayed in houses together, traded, and met eachother unarmed. However, the attack worked because the colonists were attacked in the own homes with their own weapons when they didnt see it coming. The colonists survived the attack because they didn't rely on the Indians to live. They grew and exported tobacco which allowed colonists to fend for themselves more easily. The colonists no longer depended on the Indians for food to avoid starvation or to keep an economy going.

3)Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to civilty because he believed that the natives were rude and brutal. Waterehouse thought that the Indian attacks were their way of refusing the English God. Also, he believed that by killing the Indians, the livestock would increase because the Indians would no longer be poaching them.

4) Had Opechancanough written the Declaration, it might have read "this attack is our way of showing we don't want to believe in your God. We don't want to convert to your religion and we will continue to fight for our customs. We have not tried to change you to our faith so we shouldn't have to be a part of your attempts to convert people to Christianity." The "American Pageant" supports this because it stated how the Indians fought the colonists to defend their customs.

1) The colonial reaction to the attack was to pause and see if the natives would continue attacking. The natives didnt attack for 6 months after that which caused problems. By not attacking, they caused food shortages in the winter of 1662-1663. This resulted in what ended up being the second Algo-Powhatan War.

2) The attack was prepared first by the native americans gaining the trust of the colonists which was smart because the colonists wouldnt expect anything. That lead to an easy attack from the natives by catching the colonists off guard and unexpected. The natives caught the colonists in a place they thought they were safe but the natives took the colonists weapons and killed them with it. They killed whoever they could and the survivors depended on their tobacco plants to keep an economy going.

3) Waterhouse suggested conquest was preferable to civility because the colonists no longer needed the native americans anymore. It was easier to take over the natives than be civil. Without the natives, there would be more land, food, and natural resources for the colonists. He didnt see a need to share with the natives anymore.

4) If Opechancanough wrote the Declaration it would have said why the attack happened. He would have included that it was just a warning from the natives to stay away from their customs. The American Pageant supports this because it states that relations between the colonists and indians were tense and the english would always press for land. The Pageant states how the colonists always tried to convert the natives to christianity which made them mad.

1) The colonial reaction to the attack was to wait and see if the Natives to continued their attacks. The Natives waited 6 months before they continued because they hoped that the colonists would abandon Virginia. This caused many colonists to panic because there were many food shortages in the winter of 1622 through 1623. The colonists and the Native Americans lost their trust for each other because the Natives attacked the colonists, then the colonists destroyed the Native's boats, houses, and fishing gear. These events helped lead to the Second Anglo-Powhatan War.

2) The Natives prepared this attack very well. First, the Natives gained the colonists' trust by providing them with food and trading with them. The colonists thought that the Natives were very friendly, so they would let them into their homes. The Natives took this to their advantage and performed an "Inside Attack." So, the Natives entered the colonists' homes unarmed in small groups of men. Then, the men would attack the colonists and murder them with the colonists' tools. The colonists survived because they raided the Natives and after the attack they became more independent. The colonists started to grow tobacco and other crops. Lastly, some colonists were able to survive because they were warned about Opechancanough's plan the day before the attack by a converted Native. Therefore some colonist were able to leave Jamestown

3) Waterhouse suggested conquest was preferable to civility because he thought the Natives were rude, barbarous, and naked people. He also thought that conquering them would be easier and faster then, trying to become civil with them. Waterhouse also wanted to conquer them because he thought that the attack was the Natives way of rejecting Christianity. Lastly, he thought that the Natives were savages and deserved to be punished and if they were killed, the animal population would increase.

4) If Opechancanough had written this declaration, it might have stated, “This attack is a warning. We do not want to believe in Christianity, we want to believe in our own customs. We want peace and no wars, but if you continue to pressure us we are not afraid to attack you. We will fight for what we believe in and force you out of our land. At first, it was okay, but now it is not. We want a say in things too. Remember, you came to our land and tried to change us. You are lucky we gave you some land, so be thankful. You should have never raided our villages or burnt our crops” The “American Pageant” supports this because it states that the Natives fought to defend their customs and the colonists would always try to find ways to get more land and attempt to convert the Native Americans into Christians. Our book describes how the Colonists and Natives didn’t get along and what they did to each other on pages 28 through 32.

1. The colonial reaction to the attack was to wait and see if the natives would continue it. This decision would be deadly for them because the natives wouldn't attack for another 6 months and during that time the settlers endured a harsh winter and a food shortage.

2. The attack was well planned by the natives because they gained the trust of the settlers before the actual attack. They traded with the laid back settlers, The settlers eventually let them around there weapons, then when the time was right they did a kind of surprise attack. The colonists survived because they began raiding the native's communities and they grew tobacco which let them be more self-sufficient and helped there economy.

3. Waterhouse suggested conquest was preferable for to civility because he believed the attacks by the natives were to reject the beliefs of Christianity and god. Also Waterhouse believed that the natives were just rude barbaric people that just had to be dealt with.

4. If Opechancanough had written the "Declaration" it would most likely tell of why the natives attacked the colonists. The "American Pageant" supports this on pages 29-32.

1. The colonists were scared butt also surprised. They thought that they're relationships with the Indians weren't terrible. The colonists decided to wait for another attack from the Indians but during that stretch of time they experienced very hard times because of the rough winter and loss of food. Eventually the colonists would attack the natives and take their land.

2. The attack was prepared well because the Natives gained all of the colonists trust. This was a huge part of their planning because now they didn't even have to bring weapons to attack the colonists. Also they knew that the colonists wouldn't expect an attack since they had been very friendly. The colonists survived by raiding and attacking the natives, growing and exporting their own crops, and also many had been warned of Opechancanough's plan so many colonists left immediately.

3. Waterhouse believes that conquering the natives is a much faster and easier way to control them because trying to teach them manners and a civil way to live would have been idiotic because they were savages, according to Waterhouse. Also if they were conquered the colonists would be able to have more land and more opportunities to hunt.

4. The Declaration would had explained all the concerns that the natives had. Looking at what Waterhouse had to say about the colonists, it seems that the natives didn't want anything to do with Christianity or giving any more land. The natives were just trying to protect their own interests which they would have explained if they had written the declaration.

2. The Native Americans were not the ones expected to attack because they were not armed when they first met the colonists and because the natives gained the colonists’ trust. The natives planned their attack sufficiently and they attacked the English with their own weapons. The attack resulted in a quarter of the colony’s population being annihilated. The colonists survived this attack by becoming self-sufficient and not having to depend on the Native Americans anymore.

3. Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferably to civility because he thought that by the natives attacking them, they were rejecting the belief of God and Christianity. Waterhouse believed that Native Americans were just simply bad people who deserved to be punished because of their actions. The English stopped trading with the natives because they thought that if the entire Native American population was finished, there would be more land the colonists to expand.

4. If the Declaration was written by Opechancanough, it would have included a warning. He would have said that the attack would be the final warning for them or else they will go to war. He might write something about how they do not want their lifestyle to be changed. The American Pageant supports this by stating how the Native Americans fought to keep their original customs and traditions. It also talks about how the colonists proved they only cared about themselves because all they worried about was trying to gain more land and convert the natives into Christians.

1-The colonial reaction was to wait and see if the Native Americans would continue their attack which caused the lack of food that was responsible for the starvation in the winter of 1622-1623. They also began to think the Native Americans could not be trusted and should be taken over.

2-The Native attack was well prepared. They used the trust the colonists had to their advantage. The colonists were slaughtered by tools found in their own village. They were able to survive by raiding the Natives and by growing tobacco and corn.

3-Waterhouse suggested that conquest was a better option than civility because he saw that the settlements were doing well without the help of the Natives. Also with the Natives gone their would be no more competition for food or land. Another reason he suggested it was because without the Natives there would be no fear of an attack.

4-If The Declaration was written by Opechancanough, I believe he would have explained their reasons for the attack and how the settlement was bad for the Natives including how the settlement brought disease. The Pageant supports this by saying how the settlement was taking up Native land and how the disease was killing many Natives due to their lack of immunity.

1. The colonial reaction to the attack left the colonists very worried of another attack that was expected to happen. This also sparked a stretch of severe food shortages throughout the winter of 1622-1623. According to Waterhouse, he believed that this now gave the colonists the right to "destroy them who sought to destroy us". Sixth months later the natives finally attacked again.

2. The attack was prepared based on the current relationships with the colonists. The colonists were very laid back and often opened up their homes to the natives. Knowing this, the natives did not bring there own weapons and instead, used the colonists' own tools to attack and kill them. The colonists could not defend themselves. They natives new the entire plantation and this is what made their attack successful. The colonists survived by becoming more independent as now they could no depend on the natives. They started to grow tobacco for themselves.

3. Waterhouse suggested the that the conquest was preferable to civility for several reasons. He said that the natives were rude, barbarous, and naked people. An attack would be much easier than making peace as the colonists were much more advanced than the natives. This would allow the colonists to take back the land which in turn, would help the populations of animals to rise as the natives were "poachers of the English livestock".

4. If Opechancanough had written the Declaration it would have said, " Colonists, do not take this attack lightly, as it was bound to happen. You came into Virginia looking to run our people out and we will not stand for that to happen. You have tried to change our people and we have tried to work together, but we can not deal with it any longer. I suggest that you shall leave Virginia immediately as further action will take place." The American Pageant supports this because it says the colonists brought disease and often tried to overpower the native indians.

1. The colonial reaction to the attack was initially fear and shock. This sense of panic led to bad strategies such as waiting for another Indian attack. Since there wasn't another attack for another 6 months this led to major food shortages in the winter of 1622-1623.After suffering this hardship, the colonist attacked the natives which consequently led to the second algo-powhatan war.
2. The attack was well planned and executed. the Native Americans sensed the laziness and the relax attitudes from the colonists and took full advantages of it. Since the colonists had trusted the natives and relied on them for so much, the natives attack was a full surprise. The native Americans showing up without any weapons and things to trade built a sense of common security which then the natives used the colonies' own weapons and killed them off guard. the colonists then had to learn how to survive independently which they did by learning how to grow tobacco and build a well balanced economy.
3. Waterhouse suggested that conquest was preferable to the civility due to the recent attacks and their basic way of life. Waterhouse thought of the natives as naked savages and would be impossible to turn them civil. He thought of them as a lower class of people and was just easier to kill them. Also by attacking the colonists, he felt that the Indians had rejected Christianity and should be severely punished.
4. A declaration by Opechancanough may have been something like this ......"that attack is only the begining of your troubles. Ever since you have arrived in our lands we have been trying to accept your way of life, all the while you try to change ours. We have shown hospitality by showing you how to survive but you have overstayed your welcome. We do not want war but we will not idly sit by while you take our land and our lives. if you do not leave these lands we will have war"

1. The colonial reaction to the act was shock since they had no previous issues with the Native Americans. The Native Americans had been willing to trade with them and had even stayed in some of their homes. The colony had decided that instead of attacking and fighting they would wait and see if the Native Americans would attack again. But, no attacks had happened for six months which caused many food shortages in the winter of 1662-1663 and had eventually led to the second Algo-Powhatan War.

2. The Native Americans had done an excellent job in preparation for the attack by gaining the colonists full trust and creating a peaceful bond. The Indians would be welcome in the colonists’ homes since they would never arrive with weapons and would even trade goods with them. Opechanacanough had been able to gain information and form a trust that made the colonists at ease. He then took advantage of this opportunity and attacked the colonists with their own weapons, killing almost a quarter of their English population. The colonists had survived by using the resources and skills they already had, such as tobacco, to become independent and strive in their colony.

3. Waterhouse had suggested conquest was preferable to civility because of all the events that had happened. He believed this was their way of rejecting God and Christianity and he now viewed them as rude, barbarous naked people. He wanted to punish them for their actions and decided that they were no longer needed. By taking over the Native Americans it would allow the colonists to have more land and resources for themselves and would ensure that his colony would not have to worry about the same betrayal from the Native Americans again in the future.

4. If Opechanacanough had written this Declaration it would have been written as a warning towards the colonists. He would have explained his reasons for committing the attack such as wanting complete control of his land and resources, as well as continuing his traditions and beliefs in religion, politics and lifestyle. The American Pageant supports this because it explains that the Native Americans would fight the colonists to save their customs. They had always been pressured by the colonists to live life the way they do and for more land which had upset them and persuaded them to attack.

2.The attack was prepared and the colonists had no idea. They had used the colonists by joining peace together and colonists welcoming them to their homes invited the natives for information. And thats when they began the attack. The colonists were scared and it led to many food shortages.

3. Waterhouse suggested that the conquest was preferable to civility because he had thought the Native Americans were dishonorable and nude. He didn't like their rejection to Christianity. But he thought with the Native American population down, there would be a bigger animal population and that meant more food.
4. I believe the Declaration from Opechancanough would have been written like, " You have been warned. you have waltzed in and changed our customer. 3.water house thought by attacking the natives turn out to be rebellious to English god and these naked and rube people are no more trustworthy. So, he thought killing them and capturing their land will not only increase population of animals as they were hunters but civility also.
4.This might have been the deceleration if it was read,"you don't deserve the mercy and grace of our god. you proved by attacking on our innocent people you were not worthy of respect and independence which we offered to you . You betrayed us . So, get ready for a war. A war against your brutality, insanity and betrayal.you wanted to change us now we will change you. Be ready for the war. we are coming"

1. The colonial reaction to the Natives attacking them was a shock to them. They thought they were at peace with the natives.
2.The attack was prepared by the colonists moving into the natives villages and the native went into their houses and killed the colonists with their own weapons. Some of the colonists survived by fighting back and after the war with other they started planting tobacco.
3.Waterhouse suggested conquest was perferable to civility because he didn't like the native, he thought they were rude and dishonorable. He thought if there were less natives there would be more food for them.
4. The declaration might have read if Opechancanough written it, " We had to attack you because you colonists are hardheaded and don't understand that this was our land way before you washed ashore. Why can't we keep our religion and customs? Why do we have to follow your ways when you don't follow ours?"
